Battle of Wits, Part 2

Spencer: 'What does Jesus do?'

Me, after considering and rejecting several answers as being overly complicated: 'He lives in Heaven.'

Spencer: 'Is it a long drive?'

Me: 'Go ask your dad.'

Shane: 'Yes. Very long.'

In case you're keeping score, that's Spencer 2, Shane 1, and me a big fat zero.

She Doesn't Live Here Anymore

My 20 year high school reunion is tonight. Going on as we speak, you might say. I decided not to go.
I felt this vague, uneasy desire to attend; or more accurately, I wanted to want to attend, if that makes sense. But I really didn't care to go, there was no one I wanted to see. It wasn't worth finding a sitter. That troubled me until I realized that it wasn't so much about any kind of ill will towards my classmates but rather a disconnect between the person I am now and the person they would remember. That girl is long gone.
When I think back on those years, it seems like someone else's life. I knew her well, but I never really liked her much. We were frenemies, I suppose. She moved away years ago, gone to live in Europe, or teaching women's studies at some community college.
I am someone else now, someone that girl could not have imagined. Someone she would scorn. But I'm ok with that, because I finally see (dimly) that the only way to save your life is to lose it. The only path to joy is through surrender. That girl who left, she would never get that at all. She is still out there searching for meaning and purpose in herself.
I, however, am here with my family.
