Still Life with Sticks and Dog Bowl
Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up. - Pablo Picasso
Whenever we go in the backyard lately Spencer entertains himself by gathering sticks and arranging them just so in the dogs' water bowls. This is usually a lengthy process. There appear to be very specific (though dreadfully obscure) criteria for stick selection; I imagine length, thickness, and texture all play a role. Then they must be properly positioned in the water. Much rearrangment is necessary. Somehow it always turns out looking like sculpture with profound underlying meaning.
I'm not sure how he decides he is finished...and now that I think on it I'm not sure he ever does. I guess I always wind up ushering him back inside before he is quite satisfied with the project. But true to his cheerful little self, he never complains. And it never seems to bother him that he has to start from scratch each time. I mean, I can't leave it that way. The dogs do have to drink occasionally.
